In 1997 McKinsey & Company coined the term “the war for talent” to describe the increasingly competitive corporate landscape for recruiting and retaining talented employees – and that was in 1997! Finding, developing and maintain talent in today’s marketplace takes a modern HR approach to create and maintain engaging employee experiences.   Let’s explore some simple and elegant ways to keep your HR organization best-in-class.

Today’s War for Talent

Today, talent is at the center of success for organizations both large and small. The winning products and services that make a company successful in today’s marketplace are the direct result of employees’ knowledge, skills, capabilities and attitude.

Finding, Developing and Maintaining Talent

Finding, hiring, developing and maintaining talent is key to success. But doing these things in today’s landscape is very complex. The HR mindset has to be focused techniques and best practices to get the job done.

Modern HR

Modern HR is finding a way to engage potential hires and employees in a better experience to ensure that they stay happy and stick around. To say it’s all about employee experience might sound kind of “hippy” but it is and it takes an organized and flexible process to put it in play. Keep in mind that by 2020, five generations will work side-by-side in the workplace. Ensuring the workplace is an ideal atmosphere and the perks and benefits suit everyone while still maintaining traditional HR processes and having it all run smoothly is the complexity of modern HR.

How Modern HR Creates an Engaging Experience

HR providers must come up with new strategies for developing, attracting, and retaining their human capital.  I have learned over the years that becoming an expert in modern HR is a complex endeavor. Below are ZMV’s suggestions to keep in mind while refocusing your HR processes to be more modern:

  1. Incorporate modern technologies such as cloud software and social media. This will make your process more scalable and give you the flexibility you need to grow, deliver and collect data.
  2. Survey your employees to better understand their mindset and needs. Younger employees have very different expectations about careers, collaboration, loyalty, and the tools they use to get things done. Older employees in some cases may have opposite expectations. The modern HR process must play to both sides and those that fall somewhere in between. The easiest way to accomplish this is to ask them.
  3. Start with an outline or plan for each major HR process. A complete process map is ideal. An outline or general approach is a good start. Then, adapt the outline to better suit each situation or person. Document the process and soon you will have a complete process map or blueprint of your HR services.
